In the Modern Languages department we aspire to develop a curiosity to learn a foreign language, and the culture that goes along with that language.

Spanish is taught to all students in Years Seven and Eight. In Years Nine, Ten and Eleven Spanish and French is taught on Pathway One to GCSE.

Celebrating Modern Languages

A 9% increase over the past 2 years of students achieving A*-A at GCSE level.

A group of 4 Year 10 students, studying French GCSE won a national Franco-British Council competition in association with Google and Eurostar by designing a website. Their 1st place prize was a trip to Paris in June 2016.

Our German link school participated in their 9th annual visit during April 2016. This provided a wide range of our students across all year groups to act as chaperones, showing them all of the fantastic things St Cuthbert’s has to offer.

Extra-curricular activitiestrips etc

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities to boost your language skills and knowledge of that culture.
These include:
• After school revision sessions for KS4 students
• 1:1 support sessions with class teacher upon arrangement
• Homework support sessions during dinner time for both KS3 and KS4

This year we have also joined the “Into Film Project” and will be introducing a Modern Languages Film Club. Once a half term students will be invited to sit back, relax and enjoy a selected film in either French or Spanish, allowing them to show off their ability to understand a foreign language, whilst relaxing at the same time!
