Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.
The students are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to solve problems given to them. They learn to use traditional techniques, equipment and processes alongside current technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing.
They learn to think creatively and are encouraged to evaluate the impact of designing and making on the environment around them. Design and Technology allows students to apply knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Mathematics, Science and Art within their work.
Skills learnt in this subject area help develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and it helps them to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world whilst taking into account the improving local economy and labour market.
Construction and the Built Environment level 1 and 2 aims to provide learners with a strong foundation of practical skills, technical knowledge, and sector understanding that prepares them for further study or entry into employment within the construction industry. The course is designed to be engaging, accessible, and industry-relevant, enabling learners to explore a range of construction practices, sustainability considerations, and built environment principles.
The course aims to inspire curiosity and ambition by offering a hands-on and applied learning experience that reflects real-world construction contexts whilst developing core knowledge of the built environment, including the roles of professionals, the impact of design and construction processes, and the importance of health, safety, and environmental considerations.
Construction and the Built Environment will help embed transferable skills such as problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and planning that are vital to success in construction and wider technical sectors.
Learners will build practical competence through controlled assessment tasks that simulate industry scenarios and promote independent learning alongside vital industry specific theory.
The course is designed to promote progression pathways into apprenticeships, further study including higher education and employment within the construction sector.
By completing this qualification, learners will not only understand the structure and function of the construction industry but will also be equipped with the confidence and capability to contribute meaningfully to a dynamic and evolving sector.
