The matches started promisingly for the St Cuthbert’s boys, with a tough opening game against Rainford. The lads battled it out for the first ten minutes with McKenzie P-G and Tomas K controlling the back line, keeping Matty S in place. A few decent saves from our keeper (Jake L) and a counter attack led to Sam B. taking a shot which was saved but followed up by Keane G to score the all-important goal in this game with St Cuthbert’s beating Rainford 1-0.
In game 2, the boys great start continued against St Augustine’s. Around the 5th minute, Sam B slotted home after McKenzie B brilliantly set him up. We weren’t giving St Augustine’s any time to breathe as Keane G cut in from the left and rifled one home. We finished this game with a lovely pass and play which ended with McKenzie P-G scoring a beauty and a 3-0 win.
With a draw needed to win the tournament in the final game against De La Salle, the games started back and forth with both teams countering each other until 5 minutes in when they scored a lovely goal, into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. The boys didn’t give up and worked even harder to try and get the goal they needed but unfortunately fell short. A couple of close range chances were missed and a Sam B. long range strike in the dying moments of the game brushed wide of the keepers post leaving De La Salle the victors.
The lads were brilliant today coming second in the tournament and were very unfortunate as they deserved to win the tournament overall with only 1 goal conceded.
