A phone-free school day from September
From September, we will be introducing the use of mobile phone pouches at St Cuthbert’s.
We wrote to parents and carers before the end of term to let you know about this change, and students were also informed through a special assembly.
We want ...Read moreour students to benefit from a school day with fewer digital distractions and more opportunities to:
build friendships and enjoy face-to-face conversations
stay focused and engaged in learning
take part fully in school life
enjoy social time without phones being a distraction
make the most of the opportunities available to them
We believe this is a positive step towards creating a calmer, more focused and more connected school environment.
This change supports the new Department for Education statutory guidance, which requires schools to prohibit the use of mobile phones throughout the school day, including lessons, transitions, break and lunchtime.
There is also emerging research supporting the use of lockable phone pouches in secondary schools. A recent study by King’s College London found that introducing pouches was associated with reduced smartphone use, fewer classroom disruptions and improved social interaction between students.
